1) 土门 贾平凹. This book is the one I’m strongly leaning towards, mainly because it has 229 (small) pages. The edition I

bought as well also has commentary on the side. I’ve wanted to read a book by贾平凹 for quite a while because he’s one

of China’s premier novelists, and this short novel seems like a good place to start. The disadvantage is that the

book has a lot of description and is told in non-sequential order. Anyway, it’s about the economic and social changes

that befall a small village that is being usurped by a nearby town.
2) 我本英雄 周梅森. This seems to be a political thriller by周梅森, who I’ve seen described as a man who’s fightin’ the

corrupt system by exposing the Dickensian injustices that many oppressed people live under in the Mainland. The vocab

doesn’t seem too difficult, but the book clocks in at 452 (albeit, big fonted) pages.
3) 霸王别姬 李碧华. This is the great book that the movie was based on. The vocab seems a bit difficult and the narration

style isn’t always straightforward, but it has lot of dialogue and people might at least know the general character

outlines due to the movie. It’s also relatively short at 231 pages.

I'm leaning towards 周梅森's corruption investigation novel, 《国家公诉》, available at the sina.com site below.

BaWanBieJi ("Farewell My Concubine") is here:

I couldn't find either 土门 nor 我本英雄

What about 我本英雄? I found it on-line:

In any case, once again, you can read 我本英雄 on the web at:

I suggested Lu Xun short stories a month ago, but no one followed up. They're probably either too hard or too serious

for most people.

The DVDs from YesAsia arrived today. I bought this version: (中国式离婚)

I've just started watching this and have found the text of the book at the following location. It appears to follow

the television series reasonably closely.

Hey all. I finished watching 生死劫 and recommend it for language learning. Lots of conversation, fairly clearly

spoken, and picked up well by the microphone boom that pops down in front of the camera in about every 2nd scene,

lol. I've downloaded tons of soaps and have finally found another one that has good audio, no mumbling, and a modern

day setting. It's a 20 episode show called 一网情深. The only downside is no subtitles, however this could be a plus.

While watching 生死劫, about a quarter of the time I covered up the subtitles so I could focus purely on my listening

skills. Since the main point in my opinion of watching these soaps is to absorb the language naturally, I think no

subs may be a good thing. But subs definitely have their advantages.

Btw, I've been using BSPlayer to watch these files (mostly rm and rmvb). The good thing about BSPlayer is that it has

a slick interface and has bookmarks so you can quickly jump to where you last left off, so it's easy to watch 5 or 10

minutes of a show throughout the day and not have to search for where you last stopped each time. To use BSPlayer

with rm/rmvb files, I had to install the Matroska codec pack.

Hi all. I just want to recommend a famous tv show called 北京人在纽约, starring a great actor, 姜文. It was made in 1988.

I'm on episode 8 of 21 and really enjoying it. There's some English mixed in as well, since this was filmed in New

York. The audio in some places isn't that great, but that's the only negative. It's available on verycd.com and you

can also find the e-book if you do a search with e-mule.
